The story behind the breath

Have you ever been so low that getting out of bed felt like the biggest fight of your day?

I have. In 2025, my life came apart at every seam at once. A relationship I thought I would spend my future inside of ended. Job after job let me go, like the universe kept closing doors I had not even finished walking through. I packed up and moved to a new city, and grief followed me. Some mornings the weight was so heavy I could not move. The world was not just hard. It felt like it was caving in.

Then a friend called. And in the middle of everything falling apart, she said one word that changed my life. “Breathe.” So I did. One deep breath, and something in me cracked open and recentered all at once. In that stillness, I heard it clearly. This was not just my pain to survive. It was my assignment to transform. That breath became a calling, and in May 2025, Brother Breathe was born, a platform built to remind people, especially men, that healing out loud is not weakness. It is the bravest thing we will ever do.

Howard Thurman said it best. Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and do it, because what the world needs is people who have come alive. Brother Breathe is what came alive in me, and I built it so it could do the same for someone else.

This is not new work for me. For over a decade, I have led DEI strategy in higher education, building training programs, bias workshops, and spaces where people finally felt seen. I know how to listen for what a room needs and build something that actually serves it. Brother Breathe is that same gift, now pointed at the parts of us we were taught to keep quiet.

Waco raised me. Texas State University, Emory’s Candler School of Theology, and Morgan State University educated and shaped me. Playwriting taught me that the realest stories are the ones people are scared to say out loud, so I built a platform to say them anyway.

Brother Breathe is not just a podcast. It is a lifeline.

I built it because I needed it to exist. Now I am asking you to help it reach everyone else who does too.

Keep breathing, healing, and becoming
